a summer bursting with patchwork color September 06 2025

i held off on my daily flower harvest so we could enjoy a bountiful garden at peak bloom for my daughter’s wedding party. the untended beauty was the backdrop for a truly memorable event.

there really is nothing i enjoy more than a slow morning in the garden, harvesting blooms with abandon and no time constraints. this is the perfect calm after days filled with hosting and celebrating. the patchwork collection of flowers set to dry on my studio floor inspired these colorful handbound journals.

working with color makes me so happy... i feel a deep satisfaction when a vision in my mind is captured in something tangible i made with my hands. these hemp linen plant-dyed patchwork journals really capture the dye garden at its height of bloom. preserving color in fabric and then stitching the small pieces back together again to create color combinations is meditative and informative. there are puzzles to solve with size and shape and the subjective decisions of color balance. i am fascinated by what pleases my eyes and what absolutely does not, it almost feels out of my control…  something i can’t explain.

i made a small batch of patchwork plant-dyed handbound journals for my shop. each book contains 116 pages and measures 6.25 x 9.5.” this is a half size version of my extra-large handbound journal, the spread is as big as a single page in the extra-large journal. it is bigger than my standard journals and smaller than my everyday extra-large journal - a ‘just-right’ size for lists and sketches and taped bits of thread and fabric.

we chose a wedding weekend to coincide with my garden in full bloom and crossed our fingers for good weather. there are things we have a hand in controlling (like predicting when my garden would be in full glory), and things we have absolutely no control of (like the weather). how thankful i am that all of the parts came together to create such a perfect event. it was a weekend filled with vibrant sunshine, tables overflowing with flowers, delicious food, beautiful friends and family, intimate conversation and lots of laughter. i am so grateful for all of the dear people that helped me pull off this homegrown celebration.
