a writing practice for the new year December 27 2025

one of my favorite traditions is starting a fresh journal at the beginning of the new year.

i fill many journals over the course of a year. i rely on them for almost every aspect of my life, both the creative and the practical. if i don’t have a journal close by, i scratch notes on any bit of paper within reach and transfer it to one of my books later. to-do lists, favorite words, aspirations, musings, drawings, bits of fabric and thread, dye pot recipes, reminders... i have to write it all down or i lose it. this practice allows me to be more creative and focused as it eliminates the pressure of remembering. my journals are my lifeline.

the first thing on my list once all holiday orders were stitched and shipped was to replenish the sold out journals in my shop. find the full collection here.

the extra large journal is the book i use every single day. the huge spread is a perfect place to contain my expansive creative explosions. these books contain 116 pages and measure 9.5 x 12.5.” i cover each journal with organic hemp linen fabric that is plant-dyed in small batches in my dye studio with plants from my dye garden.

the daily practice journal is my thickest journal with 366 pages. i like to use this as a multi-year journal. this book inspired a ritual of daily engagement for me - i return to the same date year after year to jot my thoughts and revisit my frame of mind the year prior. it also makes a lovely multi-year garden journal. books measure 3.25 x 6.25”, and come tucked inside a 6 x 8.75” matching plant-dyed organic hemp linen bag.

the original slim journal is available embroidered or plain and is a staple in the kata golda collection. this journal tucks into a tote and is easy to keep on hand all the time. i keep one in the kitchen for my sourdough baking logs. my mom, an avid reader, uses one to keep a list of books she has read. she includes thoughts on each book and who she she would recommend it to. i love this about my mom! each book contains 104 pages and measures 3.25 x 6.25”.

little felt journals and pocket notebooks are my smallest books. i often have one of these little books in the pocket of my work apron or in my purse. i have friends who fill the pages of their little felt journals with a sketch-a-day, the compact size makes this an accessible daily practice.

you can also learn to make your own journals!
once you learn the skill, it is endlessly adaptable. the DIY bookbinding kit (refills available) offers step-by-step instructions for the coptic bookbinding technique. the DIY accordion fold book kit makes a book that is perfect for photos, sketches, and watercolors.
