two of my dearest friends recently opened wood-fired sauna businesses on opposite sides of the country.

seaside sauna is in port townsend, wa and wild trails sauna is in state college, pa. they both asked me to design and craft wool felt sauna hats for them and i happily agreed. these were such a hit i made a free sewing tutorial and accompanying DIY materials bundles for my shop.



sauna hats originated in the sweat-bathing cultures of eastern europe, russia, and the nordic regions. a wool hat helps to regulate your temperature in the extreme heat and steam so you can enjoy a longer session. a sauna hat also protects your hair. repeated exposure to extreme heat can dry out your hair, making it brittle and prone to breakage. traditional sauna hats have a signature loop so you can hang your hat to dry after each session.



each DIY sauna hat materials bundle includes a 21 x 10" piece of thick plant-dyed 100% wool felt, 6 yards of lace weight mohair/silk yarn, and a hand sewing needle. note that the sewing tutorial is not included in the bundle, you can find it here. the bundle is available in four colors: off-white/tea-dyed with dark turquoise yarn, black with soft pink yarn, plum with lime green yarn, and soft grey with red yarn.

karyn’s seaside sauna (lower left) is perched at the edge of the salish sea in port townsend, wa. two wood-fired saunas are just steps from a dip in the cold saltwater. cynthia’s wild trails sauna (lower right) is nestled in the woods of state college, pa. her mobile barrel sauna and cold plunge bring thermal contrast therapy to the forest and waterways of central pennsylvania.

i love pairing wool felt colors with contrasting shades of silk/mohair yarn. my studio is a sea of hats! the handmade sauna hats are only available onsite at seaside sauna and wild trails sauna.

it is more important than ever to make our voices heard at the polls. fasten your vote button to a tote bag, backpack, coat, purse, beanie, baseball cap... most importantly, get out and VOTE! i am trying to keep these in stock through the midterm elections. vote buttons are made with plant-dyed wool felt that i dyed in my dye studio with flowers from my dye garden. buttons are stitched with silk/mohair lace weight yarn from the lamb & kid and measure about 1.75 x 1.75” to 2.75 x 2.75”. each button is one-of-a-kind.
